Harnessing the sun light and heat

The radiant light and heat obtained from the sun is called solar energy. Solar energy uses captured sunlight to create photovoltaic power or concentrated solar power for solar heating. In 1839 a French physicist, A.E.Becquerel discovered photovoltaic effect, which is a physical and chemical phenomenon through which voltage and electric current is generated in a material upon exposure of light. Solar-powered photovoltaic panels convert the sun’s rays into electricity by electrons in silicon cells using the photons of light from the sun. The noticeable advantages are that solar power is a renewable free and pollution free source of energy. OYLA gives a vivid idea on the uses of the renewable, inexhaustible and affordable form of solar energy. More

The transitioned life of Inuit

Inuit are a group of culturally similar indigenous people inhabiting the Arctic regions of Greenland, Canada, Alaska and Russia. Inuit were formerly addressed as Eskimos in Greenland but the term was replaced as Inuit by the Canadian government since it was considered disrespectful. The perception was that the word indicated barbarians, the eaters of raw meat and those who indulged in violence. They lived in Igloos but now most of them live in regular wooden houses. But till today Igloos are used occasionally when they go for hunting far from their home. Saltwater and fresh water fishes, mammals like polar bear are some of their main diets. Due to the extreme cold weather conditions they wear big furry boots with tunics and trousers over them. Allow OYLA to disclose about the Inuit language, their interesting culture and the transitions in their lives. More

Boon and bane of screen time on children

Internet and media have a great influence not only on adults but also on children. Screen time includes browsing, watching movies or videos and playing games. The kids these days gain immense knowledge and grasp vast ideas from surfing the internet. Playing games and learning from internet largely increases confidence, hand-eye coordination, creativity and teamwork in children. The internet is highly informative on almost any topic a person is inquisitive about. The research studies claim that children who use the internet are smarter and more sociable comparatively. Despite of agreeing that the internet makes the children smarter it is a known fact that there are high demerits that can affect the children badly. Children who spend too much time on internet, media, mobile or any kind of screen time risk the possibility of impair brain structure and function. It can also cause insomnia, obesity, mood swings and poor academic results. OYLA’s touch on this topic brings complete awareness on how a child can utilize the wonders of science through the internet wisely in an advisable screen time managed manager. More

Partially extinct primitive Morse code

Morse code is the method used in telecommunication to encode text characters as standardization sequences of two different signal duration called dots and dashes or long and short sounds that correlated to each letter of the Latin alphabet through electronic telegraph or light signals. Coded messages were passed on through certain methods like drums, smoke signals, semaphore systems etc during ancient times until Morse code came into existence. Morse code is universal and it was created in the early 1940’s by Alfred Vail to use Samuel Morse’s telegraph. It was widely used during World War II in war ships to communicate with each other at vast distances while at sea and naval bases so that the exchanged secretive signal messages were secure among them. This method was used to avoid the high risk of radio frequency being identified by military enemies and also due to the limited radio frequency. The Us Navy and Guard still use signal lamps to communicate through Morse code. In Aviation, pilots still use radio navigation aids; the transmit station transmits a set of identification letters in Morse code which is mandatory for the pilots to understand in-order to navigate. Morse code has been replaced by a satellite link called the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System. Sharpen your thoughts and ideas on the dots and dashes with the help of OYLA and learn to communicate with signals too. More
